SCAM! Buisness E-mail Compromise
How and when to report the matter to the FBI.
Back in October 2016, MAR issued a scam alert regarding hackers getting access to private email accounts. They pose as a trusted business professional, it could be your account they hack, and request a transfer of funds for a time-sensitive payment to help complete or process a transaction. Instructions to wire funds are included, monies are wired, often to an overseas account, and the funds are gone.
The scam has been reported in all fifty states and in 79 countries. Over 8,000 victim complaints totaling almost $800 million were reported to the FBI from October 2013 to August 2015.
As this scam is prevalent in Massachusetts, the FBI and the Association encourages you to read this guide. The flyer contains an introduction to the scheme, common variations, suggestions for protecting yourself, and, most importantly, how and when to report the matter to the FBI. Print, e-mail, and/or share this document with your co-workers, and clients so everyone is prepared to react should the need arise.
HOLD THIS DATE - SEPTEMBER 20: Cyber Security Awareness Presentation - Are You and Your Clients Protected? It is imperative you take steps to protect sensitive and personal data. We are exicited to present three national speakers, all experts on this topic: Robert Siciliano, Nobu Hata and Jason Craw, FBI Boston Field Representative. Registration material will soon be available.
